Kinda Black Monday

Everyone can agree that the market news is certainly dismal and it got me to thinking about what we consider necessary to our lives. I look around my campus and almost every girl has a designer bag-guys and girls are decked out in logos head to foot and of course a cell phone is stuck to every ear. When did these become necessities? I remember my god mother telling me that it wasn't what you wore, but how you conducted yourself that was important. I find that people seem to be more interested in the veneer and not the substance of a person. Students are swamped with offers for easy credit and often find it hard to resist the lure of instant gratification. Maybe we should all read How Luxury Lost Its Luster.

My husband is in the banking world and yesterday he called to tell me it is like the world is coming to an end. Scary for so many. Teaching "values" at a young age should be a prerequisite, such as gym. Today we need to stress the value of family, of caring for one another and work to leave the world better.
We are hanging on tight, cutting back and trying to do with less to ride this wave. I think it is just the beginning of an even bigger wave coming.

I totally agree. It is frightening not only for us as adults, but also the undercurrent of fear is felt by children. Let me date myself by saying how I remember the fear of the Cuban Missle Crisis and seeking pamphlets with red covers at the bank telling you how to build and stockpile a bomb shelter. The image of that pamphlet has stuck with me for years.

I've really been looking at our budget at lot lately and thinking about our "expenses". Some are completely unnessacary. I want to be a better example to our children. We are thinking about cutting out our Country Club membership!

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I love the Cape, too. When we were in our last house, our next door neighbors were from the Cape, so we vacationed there a couple of times. I'm with you on the luxury thing. But I'm of the opinion that once you can get it at Costco (Lilly, c'mon what are you thinking) why would you want it anymore? I saved my tip money forever to get a Coach bag when I was in college, but now that I can afford to just buy one I don't even want one because everybody has one...including 12 year olds.

Grrr. Don't even get me started!

Welcome to blogging, btw.

I was just thinking the same thing. Remember when cell phones and pagers were a luxury? LOL!
